How to Measure Your French Bulldog for a Raincoat
Updated: Oct 17
If you've ever ordered a dog coat for your Frenchie and watched it choke at the neck while gaping at the belly, you're not alone. French bulldogs are built like little linebackers, and most dog apparel isn't. Here's how to measure your Frenchie so the next coat actually fits.
Why Frenchies are hard to fit
Most dog coats are sized by weight and designed around slimmer, longer breeds. Frenchies break that pattern:
Deep chest: the widest part of a Frenchie is right behind the front legs, and it's wider than the weight chart expects.
Thick neck: a collar opening sized for the dog's weight is often too tight.
Short back and legs: a coat long enough for the chest can drag past the tail.
That's why we size by measurement, not weight.
How to measure your Frenchie in 3 steps
Grab a soft tape measure (or a piece of string and a ruler) and have your dog stand, not sit.
Chest: measure all the way around the widest part, just behind the front legs. This is the most important number.
Neck: measure around the base of the neck, where the collar sits.
Back: measure from the base of the collar to the base of the tail.
Write all three down. Then compare them to the size guide on the product page, starting with chest.
Between sizes? Size up
Frenchies and other deep-chested breeds usually need one size up from what the weight would suggest. A coat that's slightly roomy still keeps the rain off. A coat that's too tight across the chest won't get worn at all. It should feel snug, but you should be able to slide two fingers underneath.
Still not sure? We'll check it for you
When you order from Tito & Tails, there's an optional box on the product page for your dog's chest measurement. A real person checks it against the size you picked before anything ships, and we'll email you if it looks off. If it still lands wrong, we'll swap the size free within 30 days of delivery.
Tito, our Frenchie, has tried on more coats that didn't fit than we can count. That's the whole reason this shop exists.
